Dorothea Fleiss and several western and eastern artists founded the Non Profit Association „d. fleiss & east-west artists e. V." for professional artists, in January 1998.
The purpose of our association is to establish a working basis for the cooperation between artists from eastern and western countries.Our aim is to encourage and to improve the cultural and the artistic exchange between outstanding artists originating from different historical backgrounds, defined by eastern and western countries, respectively.
A great impact to achieve this aim is granted by artists from all around the world being in close contact to each other and to our association.
With the participation of western and eastern artists in symposia and group exhibitions held in the East or in the West (between 2000 and 2010 in Germany, China, Romania, Hungary, Serbia, France, Turkey) these artists will contribute to create a broader understanding of the contemporary arts in the respective part of the world. In the past 10 year more than 900 artists, writers, musician, art historian taking part in our projects in Germany, Romania, Serbia, France and China.

In this year is the 4th –d. fleiss & east west artists” Symposia of Modern Art Residency Hotel Kärtnerhof Mallnitz AUSTRIA, curetting by Dorothea Fleiss and Elisabeth Koch.
More than 40 artists representing 16th countries from all-round of the world will participate (Painters, Photographers, Sculptors, Musicians ...).
At the DFEWA RESIDENCY MALLNITZ HOTEL KÄRTNERHOF we have more than 250m² working space, where we have the possibility to work together and hold meeting- discourses about the “currents in the Arts today”. In this year it will by a great opportunity for all participants to creating and prepare together a big Performance & Installation –VENICE 1920- at the time of our visit at the Architecture Biennale in Venice- 2010.

Esposizione: le opera di scultura saranno installate nella città di Mallnitz e nel National Park Oberntauern; le opere bidimensionali a Stoccarda nel 2011 e in altre occasioni (Istanbul e Ankara in Turchia, e in altri musei)

Dorothea Fleiss e numerosi artisti e artiste che hanno dato vita al gruppo d. fleiss & east-west artists nel 1998, con l’intenzione di stabilire basi di cooperazione e di lavoro comune tra artisti dell’ovest e dell’est, hanno organizzato il 4° simposio Internazionale d’arte moderna nella città di Mallnitz, in Austria.
In una situazione di lavoro a contatto con la natura diverse artiste ed artisti di varie nazionalità, ospitati presso l’hotel Kärntnerhof, lavoreranno per sette giorni in uno spazio comune di 250 mq al fine di realizzare le opere destinate a rimanere nella città di Mallnitz o ad essere esposte in diversi musei europei.
Come è consuetudine nei simposi d’arte contemporanea alle ore di lavoro si alterneranno momenti di confronto e di svago, ogni artista avrà modo di presentare, attraverso proiezioni, il proprio lavoro e la propria poetica e di far conoscere al consesso artistico elementi della propria cultura.
Per il 7 ottobre è prevista una visita alla città di Venezia, città che dà il nome al progetto complessivo che sta alla base del simposio stesso: Venice 1920. Nell’ambito del progetto sono previste anche:
. la realizzazione di una serie di performances, individuali e collettive, che saranno definite in Mallnitz.
. la possibilità di creare opere realizzate a più mani
. l’organizzazione di momenti di confronto su Correnti artistiche nell’arte oggi e Arti contemporanee

3TE DFEWA SYMPOSIUM FÜR MODERNE KUNST MALLNITZ 2009

Wie jedes Jahr auch in diesem Jahr fand in Mallnitz das - 3te d.fleiss & east west artists Symposium - für moderne Kunst statt, neue war es in diesem Jahr das 90 % Prozent der Teilnehmern Bildhauer waren.

Weil mehrere Künstlern aus verschiedenen Gründen die Teilnahme absagen müsste, waren wir letztendlich nur noch Bildhauern außer mir als Malerin und Camelia Deznan Photographin.

Die Bildhauern hatte mich wie letztes Jahr motiviert selbst mit Holz zu arbeiten, wie letztes Jahr benütze ich Holz um meine Kunstbüchern zu machen, diesmal war es aber viel intensiver die Auseinandersetzung mit der Holz.

Motiviert von der Jungfräulichkeit der Berge schuf ich das Mallnitzer Gebetstagebuch.

Vor viele Jahren hatte mich mein Freund und College Adrian Golban motiviert mit Holz zu arbeiten, aber nach einem kleinen Unfall bekam ich einen Schreck und entschied- doch nicht mit Holz zu arbeiten, vor 6-7 Jahren Prof. Walter Ipscher der Bildhauer hatte mich wieder und wieder motiviert Skulptur zu machen, da ich zu dieser Zeit und auch schon früher 3 Dimensionale Gemälde geschaffen habe, wie das Gebetstagebuch Nürnberg 2004.

Pavel Petras und auch Giuseppe Strano Spitu motivierte mich Skulpturen zu machen- was immer interessanter in meine Ohren klingt.

Fernando Barredo de Valenzuela, hatte einen Totem aus einem sehr großes Holz gemacht, was er als „ Kristall aus Harz“ genannt hatte, diese Skulptur kommt dann in der Nähe des Friedhofs Mallnitz, bei dem Aufgang zum Holzhaus, hin, damit ist die in 2006 zu Grundstein gelegte „ DFEWA Traumlandschaft“ Skulpturen Park Mallnitz Realität geworden Pavel Petras, mit seine.

Skulptur „Lebens Elixier“ die eigentlich eine LebensgebendeVagina repräsentiert und

Adrian Golban „Maternität“ und auch Giuseppe Strano Spitus Busenansammlung… führen alle zu demselben Thema-

Schutz- Geborgenheit- Heiligkeit- Jungfräulichkeit – des Ortes zu tun.

Julia und Shane Stratton aus USA haben auch interessante Werke geschaffen, da Julia die Metallteile aus USA schon mitgebracht hatte, deswegen bearbeitete sie ihre Metallteile in den Mallnitzer Holz was wir von BIOS bekommen haben, die Skulptur wird in den Zentrum- Park von Mallnitz ausgestellt und dort können Kindern damit spielen eine sehr schöne Arbeit.

Shane hat mit den Symbol – Ethnische Symbol von amerikanische Indianern gearbeitet und wie er sagte das erste mal in einem solchen Holz- Kolosse eine sehr gelungen Arbeit die im Hotelgarten bleibt.

Zurückhaltung habe ich schon … weil ich immer mit sehr konsekrierte Bildhauern zusammen bin... und dennoch Adrian Vertic zum Beispiel hat in der Universität Bildhauerei gelernt, wobei er auch schon damals ein sehr gute Porträtist war, wie man hört, des ungeachtet, hatte er mehr al 15 Jahren keine Skulptur mehr gemacht weil er mit Malerei sein Geld verdient also eine Ausbildung aber eigentlich ohne Praktizierung.

Ich frage mich, kann man sich Bildhauer nennen wenn man eigentlich nur noch malt oder ist man nur einfach "Künstler"?

Jedenfalls war es ein Genuss Adrian Vertic bei seiner Arbeit sehen zu können, obwohl er immer den Unzufriedenen gab, was ich oft gar nicht geglaubt hatte, wenn ich an seine Aktivitäten innerhalb des Symposiums denke.

Sein Engel Skulptur ist sehr gelungen und wird auch getauft nächste Woche von der Mallnitzer Pfarrer und jetzt schmückt die Terrasse des Hotels Kärntnerhof und mit Sicherheit auch schützt.

In diesem Jahr hatten wir aus finanziellen und auch zeitlichen Gründen das Venedig- Ausflug nicht machen können, zu unsere Bedauern, nur einen Bildhauer Symposium sollte mindestens 15- 18 Tagen sein und nicht eine Woche, dazu braucht man auch gute Utensilien, besonders die mit dem Flugzeug kommend nach Mallnitz.

Leider bekommen wir sehr wenig Hilfe von der Gemeinde in Mallnitz, aber immerhin nach 3 Jahren intensive Kurator Arbeit, denke ich dass der neue Bürgermeister und Herr Vizebürgermeister die Wichtigkeit dieses Projektes erkannt hatten und auch verstehen, dass Frau Koch und ich nicht mehr in der Lage sind dieses Projekt selbst zu finanzieren, wir hoffen innig auf eine größere Unterstützung ohne welche dieses Projekt nicht mehr stattfinden kann

Es war herrlich diese Jungfraulichkeit von Mallnitz in die Lunge zu fühlen und damit neue Werke zu Schaffen!

Acting as cultural mediator and in the name of communication Dorothea Fleiss received her guests in a magnificent landscape, close to Venice, in the shadows of the Alps, in the small village of Mallnitz (Austria), and invited them to embark on a journey without borders and misperceptions.


4 to 12 October 2008.

This symposium in Mallnitz subscribes to the series of events that Dorothea Fleiss finances and coordinates for more than ten years, being one of the several cultural encounters between creators from both eastern and western Europe. Being a Romanian immigrant in Germany, Dorothea Fleiss knows how important it is to open access-gates for people coming from eastern post-communist counties toward western culture and in the same time to bring the new and original contribution of eastern artists towards the west. The main goals of this type of cultural manifestation are to establish a process of communication between people, a process encouraged and controlled by the organizer with the purpose of promoting Romanian art and in the same time to facilitate cultural exchange.

The cultural encounter in Mallnitz started from Dorothea Fleiss’s collaboration with another Romanian emigrant, Elisabeth Koch, who chose to encourage artistic manifestations by offering her hostel, the Kärntener, as home and studio for the participating creators.
I must add that this is the second edition of this symposium in Mallnitz and that their common effort in the name of art does not end here, they have another common project that will help both the artists and the community of Mallnitz, by opening a Sculpture reserve – Dream landscapes – meant to integrate the artistic productions in a circuit for tourists.
It is important to mention that a great part of the works produced during these days will stay in Mallnitz and will be used in the decoration of the Kärntener that is in fact a “house for artists”. Each room of the hotel is decorated in a different style, pertaining to a different artist. This exchange is a positive one for both sides: the artistic creations will be part of a “permanent exhibition” and in the same time the town of Mallnitz becomes associated with art and culture.
As one might deduce, this is a private initiative, financially supported by the organizers. It resembles under this respect other activities that Dorothea Fleiss promoted among which the already traditional yearly symposium in Carei or the foundation of the Museum dedicated to Ion Sălişteanu opened in 2004, in Herbin, China, where D. Fleiss & East West Artists foundation donated 50 works signed by the artist. For the latter project, which originated in the desire to promote Romanian art abroad, Dorothea Fleiss collaborated with Linhong Zhao, a Chinese living in Austria, the vice-president of the D. Fleiss & East West Artists foundation.

The participants in the Symposium für Moderne Kunst, d. fleiss & east west artists, Mallnitz, were selected according to subjective criteria. Trusting her own experience, knowledge and esthetic taste, Dorothea Fleiss selected and invited either artists that she already knew or new creators whose works she saw in galleries, in common or personal exhibitions. Due to this type of selection one may note the differences among participants, in their age, artistic orientation, technique, and level of artistic education. Mrs. Fleiss gives everyone a chance, everyone she considers artistically worthy, and that is how she managed to work in time with more than 600 artists. She followed their artistic evolution over the years and continues to help them promote their own creations.
In her events, which are numerous and spread all over the world, she tries to invite each artist once every four years so that in time they all get to know each other. Some of them are invited to become permanent members of the D. Fleiss & East West artists’ foundation. D. Fleiss works with a great number of curators and she encourages a great number of young people in their artistic path and recommends them for events, symposiums or exhibitions. One good example is Inga Endriß. Inga represents Germany, has a Degree in Science (creativity, therapy and pedagogy)
And since I presented, in few words, one of the participants I should go along this road and also present some of the others.

Heinrich Untergantshick, a sculptor from Kärnten that participates for the first time in the Mallnitz symposium.

Christine Kertz (Austria) is vice president of the Beruf der Bild.Künstler Austria/Styria, and started to paint in aquarelle, acryl, and mixed techniques since 1987.

Wuriqiefu (Mongolia) does both painting and graphic works. Since 1994 he teaches at the Huhhot University in China. He is the president of the Artists Association from Inner Mongolia. In his work he uses as inspiration traditional Mongolian elements transposing them in complex compositions.

Lyudmila Dakhova (Ukraine) has an interesting artistic universe under the influence of the Russian Art Academy of Saint Petersburg. She uses mix techniques, collage and graphic in a mosaic of colors.

Máté Rainer (Hungary) graduated the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and works both as a painter and an art teacher.
He is member of D. Fleiss and East-West Artists since 2005. He does not like to work fast and therefore prefers oil colors. He works in cycles and during the symposium he started a new one, focusing on the female body.

Adrian Golban (Romania) graduated the sculpture department of the Ioan Andreescu Art Academy in Cluj-Napoca. He is active in the cultural life since 1990, creating public sculpture. He is the director of Aurel Popp Art High School in Satu Mare, Romania.

Vasile Tolan (Romania) graduated the painting department of the Ioan Andreescu Art Academy in Cluj-Napoca in 1975.
„I am equally concerned with the expression of raw material, the diversity of its manner of manifestation, the echo it has and the expression of free spontaneous gesture coming from the depth of the human being and from its abdominal part, as Jung would say...I guess my work belongs to the field between rough art and abstract gesturalism.” Vasile Tolan

Giuseppe Strano Spitu (Spain) is known for his performances and his installations but also for his sculptures, working in various materials like plastic, resin, glass, or wood.

Varsàny Pali (Hungary) followed the courses of the Architecture Academy in Budapest and the Moholy Nagy László Multimedia School, Video and Film course, Budapest. Being specialized in animation, he brought a fresh perspective in his works by using collage and mix techniques. His artistic means are minimal and every work offers something amusing or challenging.

Not only visual arts were under the spotlight in Mallnitz. For the opening of the final exhibition the present guests had the chance to listen to a classical concert performed by the soprano Carmen Vasile (Romania) accompanied by the pianist Diana Dava (Romania). Carmen Vasile is a permanent member of D. Fleiss & East West Artists foundation and she participated several times in Dorothea Fleiss’s symposiums.

Since we have started with Dorotheea Fleiss as organizer of symposiums, curator, teacher, financier, investor, founder of institutions and cultural promoter, we would like to finish this intervention with her as an artist. Dorothea Fleiss as an artist approaches different mediums like object, installation, painting or graphic, organizing her work as a personal journal. In her works one can see each state of spirit that she experiences suggested by the combination of gestures and colors.

She writes such pages with every activity that she organizes and with every work she creates she builds her own future. It is up to the reader, using his/her own cultural parameters, to receive and to decode her message.
